Michael Nesmith, formerly of the Monkees

How many of you remember the Monkees? I was only 10 or 11 when they first became a hit and I never missed an episode. I had all their albums and knew each and every song by heart! My favorite back during the late 1960's was Mickey Dolenz. As I grew up though I began to pay more attention to Michael Nesmith. There was something about him and his music that was different. After he left the Monkees, he started a solo career with the 1st National Band. The music from these albums (Loose Salute, Magnetic South and Nevada Fighter) have a modern country sound with steel guitars and yes, some yodeling. The song Joanne from the Magnetic South album got some radio play. He continued putting out albums and each one began to have it's own flavor and style of music. His album, Tropical Campfires goes south of the border with songs such as Brazil and ...for the Island. Really great stuff. Nez, as he is affectionatly called by his fans, has also ventured into music videos. Believe it or not, Nez came up with the original idea for MTV. He sold the rights to another company. His great video "Elephant Parts" won the first music video grammy. You should find a copy and watch it. Some of his best music is included along with comedy skits about Elvis drugs, Bee Gees Disease and so many another great topics of that time. Do you remember some movies from the 70's called Time Rider and Repo Man...these were Nez produced movies. Well, the point of this little article is to get you to go and listen to some of Michael Nesmith's music or take a look at his videos and movies. Oh yea, he has some books out there too.."The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora". Michael Nesmith is an artist, writer, and business man; former cast member of "The Monkees". He is a trustee and president of the Gihon Foundation and a trustee and vice-chair of the American Film Institute. |
